International Workshop Series: Edition XIII
Digital Design & Fabrication in Architecture
Tampere University of Technology, Finland
28 May - 6 June 2010

Opening Lecture – Digital Design and Fabrication in Architecture
Throughout history technological breakthroughs have resulted in innovative architectural tectonics. Today digital design tools and – more recently – digital fabrication technology are hailing a revolution in contemporary architecture. Using work and research currently happening at the Architectural Association, The International Workshop Series, Zaha Hadid Architects and many others, this lecture will address current developments and challenges in digital design and fabrication in architecture and the paradigm shift it is triggering today.
Workshop Brief
Goal:
  • Digital design: Parametric / generative modelling: explicit history applications in Rhino, using Grasshopper
  • Digital fabrication: Translation into matter using CNC technology
  • Team work / project management: control of design and workflow up until completion of a project

Part 1: Rhino – Grasshopper Tutorials
The aim is to equip students with a basic knowledge of parametric / generative modelling with Grasshopper
Part 2: Design Competition
  • Phase 1: 10 Teams of 3 students (?)
  • Jury 1: students choose 3 projects, teachers add 2
  • Phase 2: 5 teams of 6 students
  • Jury 2: students choose 1 project, teachers add 1
Part 3: Construction
  • Initial team members operate as project architects in coordinating their teams throughout the construction phase
  • Step 1: production of workshop drawings
  • Step 2: CNC milling + hand cutting (?)
  • Step 3: construction
